Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Hamburg: Poland is both pro-American and pro-European
The Head of the Polish Government participated in the FOTAR Conference in Hamburg, where, together with Deputy Chancellor and German Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz, he spoke in a discussion entitled
A European Perspective for the Future of Transatlantic Relations.
There are not many countries like Poland, which are at the same time very pro-American and on the other hand very pro-European emphasised the Prime Minister.
We are convinced that we should actively contribute to the repair of transatlantic relations he added.
Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that the United States is not an adversary of Europe.
We would like to have a peaceful relationship with everyone, including Russia and China, but we see problems on the side of China and Russia rather than the United States emphasised the Head of the Polish Government.
The Prime Minister stated that the issue of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is important in the context of European safety.
I know the position of the German government that this is a business project, but to the east of the Oder no one believes in it said Mateusz Morawiecki. As he added, from the point of view of Poland, inter alia, Nord Stream 2 is a very dangerous project.
If it turns out – after the construction of Nord Stream 2 – that the Ukrainian gas transmission system becomes unnecessary, what will stop Vladimir Putin from marching into Kiev? asked the Prime Minister.
At the moment, Russia is dependent on the transfer of gas through Ukraine. When Nord Stream 2 is created, this dependency will no longer exist he explained.
According to the Prime Minister, NATO should do something about the fact that Russia is significantly in breach of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty).
We should not pretend that it is not happening emphasised Mateusz Morawiecki. As he added, Poland understands why the Americans want to terminate the treaty. At the same time, he pointed out that in return it is necessary to work out a new solution, or perhaps even a new treaty.
The Prime Minister estimated that China is challenging the free world of democracy and the transatlantic alliance.
We need to find a way to maintain the right level of deterrence, not against the forces of the free world, but against China and Russia emphasised the Prime Minister.
