Prime Minister Beata Szydło on the investment in Świnna Poręba: New and great opportunities lie ahead of the region

For nearly 30 years no one managed to accomplish what Law and Justice did in just 2 years of its rule. Yet another election promise has been realised – said the Prime Minister Beata Szydło at the opening ceremony of a Świnna Poręba storage reservoir at Skawa River in Małopolskie Voivodeship.

The region is now better protected against flooding

This investment has a really great potential but the most important issue is protection against flooding. It is a water reservoir which can be used not only by the inhabitants of this region but the whole Southern Poland as well – said the Prime Minister Beata Szydło about the Świnna Poręba investment.

According to the Prime Minister, this investment is an opportunity for development of the neighbouring towns and villages. The Świnna Poręba reservoir construction included building 35 km of local roads as well as sanitation and rail infrastructure. She underlined that this also meant opening up to tourism. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the Wadowice region will become more attractive both for Poles and foreign tourists.

Polish technological thought. New possibilities

The Prime Minister reminded that the construction of Świnna Poręba storage reservoir was most likely one of the projects with the longest implementation period in Poland. The project was launched in 1986 and was supposed to last 10 years. This plan, however, was not realised. In 2006, the Law and Justice government returned to the idea of completing the construction. Nonetheless, as the Prime Minister Beata Szydło underlined, the next government hardly did anything in this regard and again discontinued the project. It was only in 2016 that the government of Prime Minister Beata Szydło reallocated funds for the project. For nearly 30 years no one managed to accomplish what Law and Justice did in just 2 years of its rule. We should stress the fact that the construction has been completed in such a short time - stated the Prime Minister

The investment was realised owing to the Polish technological thought. The facility was designed by Polish engineers and built by our home companies.

Świnna Poręba reservoir

The reservoir is located at the Skawa River in Małopolskie Voivodeship, in Wadowicki and Suski Poviats in the area of Mucharz, Stryszów and Zembrzyce Communes. The total cost of this reservoir construction amounted to PLN 2.2 billion. There will be a hydroelectric power station near the dam, equipped with two Kaplan turbines with total power of approx. 4.4 MW.

The dam will protect the neighbouring Skawa an Upper Vistula Valleys against floods, and secure Cracow against any potential flooding. In addition, it will be a water reservoir for municipal and industrial purposes. Świnna Poręba reservoir is a key to ensure the flood safety of the Małopolskie Voivodeship. Furthermore, it is part of the whole national anti-flooding system.
