Prime Minister Beata Szydło met with the Enquiry Mission from the Bureau International des Expositions

On Tuesday (4 April), Prime Minister Beata Szydło met with the Enquiry Mission from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). The Prime Minister expressed her support for candidature of Łódź to organise EXPO 2022.

EXPO is the largest world exhibition, organised cyclically. It aim is to present cultural, scientific and technical achievements of the nations of the world. The right to organisation of expositions is granted by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) which also oversees the preparations. The organisers are selected by voting of 169 member states. There are two types of expositions, namely, the World EXPO on general topics and the International EXPO which focuses on the most important global trends.

Candidature of Łódź – EXPO International 2022

On 23 November 2016, as the government decided, Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Tadeusz Kościński and deputy mayor of Łódź Wojciech Rosicki presented the candidature of Łódź at the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions in Paris.

The proposed motto of EXPO 2022 in Łódź is “City Re:Invented”. The theme combines revitalisation of cities with global challenges and conditions for further development of agglomerations around the world. The exhibition would take place between 15 June and 15 September 2022.

Enquiry Mission from the Bureau International des Expositions

On 3 April 2017, the three-week BIE Enquiry Mission in Poland began. The Mission is headed by the Delegate of the Republic of Korea, and includes the Chairman of the Executive Committee and the Secretary General of the BIE. The Mission is one of the key stages of the bidding process. During their visit to Warsaw and Łódź, the delegates will meet with the representatives of central and local government administration. They will also visit the proposed site of the exposition. The report of the Mission is of key importance for the voting decisions of the BIE member states.

Rivals of Łódź

Poland is one of the three candidates to organise the exposition, along with the United States and Argentina.

Minneapolis wants to organise the Expo between 15 May and 15 August 2023 with the theme of “Wellness and Well Being for All: Healthy People, Healthy Planet”. Buenos Aires proposes to organise the exposition on “Science, Innovation, Art and Creativity for the Human Development” between 15 January and 15 April 2023.

The decision on the organiser of EXPO 2022/2023 will be made in November at the BIE General Assembly.
