Every year, readers and the award chapter honour those who are particularly distinguished in the work towards free Poland. Awards are granted to individuals who defend both freedom of speech and civil liberties through their work, actions, attitudes, creativity or public activity.
This year, the title of the Man of Freedom was awarded to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and National Heritage, professor Piotr Gliński.
Among other merits of Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński, the head of the government singled out i.a. building a space
where freedom may function only between equals and determination in the fight for the truth, because – as he stressed –
in our tradition freedom is synonymous with the fight for truth. He added that
culture constitutes the scaffolding of freedom and the laureate of this award has built a very strong scaffolding indeed.
Former laureates of this award include i.a.: the President of the Constitutional Tribunal Julia Przyłębska (in 2017), former Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of Law and Justice party (in 2016), President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda (in 2015), poet and writer Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz (in 2014) and professor Krzysztof Szwagrzyk, historian at the Institute of National Remembrance (in 2013).
