The situation in Silesia is of particular concern to the government. Competent services are constantly monitoring the increase in the number of cases. They also strive to test as many people as possible in the region. All these measures are aimed at limiting the spread of the virus, especially among miners and their families.
The miners in Silesia account for almost half of the cases
So far, 7071 cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed across the Silesian Voivodeship. Almost half of the number concerns miners (3375 people). Therefore, outside the mining sector, the percentage of infections in Silesia is similar to that in the rest of the country.
Over 100 thousand tests in the region
After the first outbreaks were detected in the mines, an immediate decision was taken to carry out screening tests among miners. More than 100 thousand genetic tests for coronavirus detection have already been performed in Silesia. More than 38 thousand of those tests are screening tests conducted among miners.
Almost 60 “Swab Buses” (Polish: Wymazobusy) reach the miners
Screening tests are performed in further mining plants. In addition, approximately 60 “Swab Buses” (Polish: Wymazobusy) are sent to miners and their families. From 7 to 10 May, the first stage of tests was carried out, during which a total of over 20 thousand samples were taken. Then, from 15 to 17 May - during the second stage of the screening tests - tests were carried out among 15.8 thousand miners who had negative results in the first stage.
The collected samples are sent to diagnostic centres across the entire country. There are 11 accredited laboratories in the Silesian Voivodeship, which are able to perform 2.2 thousand tests per day.
Tests on an unprecedented scale
The meetings of the crisis management team in the Silesian Voivodeship are held every day. The government representative at the site is in regular contact with the heads of mining companies and district sanitary inspectors who coordinate the screening process.
The screening tests among miners are performed on an unprecedented scale, and lead to controlling the difficult situation related primarily to the spread of coronavirus. They are also of great importance for restoring work in the mining sector.
