Prime Minister Donald Tusk met with Herman van Rompuy, the President of the European Council, to discuss the priorities of Polish presidency and current international situation.

The head of Polish government said that the agenda of the talks included the agreements of the Friday summit of the euro group states. “The President of the European Council passed on satisfactory information concerning the course of that meeting and prospects of cooperation within the framework of the pact for the euro,” Donald Tusk summed up. Herman van Rompuy noted that during the latest meeting of the euro zone states, important decisions regarding the adoption of the economic package and the so-called European semester were managed to be taken.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Donald Tusk also presented the priorities of Polish presidency, including questions pertaining to the single market, European security, prospects of cooperation with Poland’s eastern partners and the organisation of the Eastern Partnership summit. The summit will take place during the Polish presidency in the European Union. Herman van Rompuy said that the summit would be one of the most important events during the Polish presidency.

Both politicians discussed international issues, including the situation in Japan. “The Japanese tragedy makes us to direct the words of compassion and solidarity with that country,” the head of Polish government underscored. Herman van Rompuy recalled that the European Union was ready to grant assistance and that, so far, 20 EU member states, including Poland, offered their personnel and material aid.

The agenda of the talks also included the situation in North Africa and in the Near and Middle East. Donald Tusk underscored that the observance of human rights and humanitarian aid for that region were the most important things. “For the time being, any easy and optimistic conclusions are lacking,” he summed up.

The Polish prime minister also noted that the current situation in the world, including the Political instability in many regions, inflated prices and the Japanese drama, pose new challenges for the European Union and for Poland and require determination in order to carry out the intended projects. “I am convinced that, also during the time of Polish presidency, we shall not lack this determination,” declared Donald Tusk.
