Radosław Sikorski
Born on 23rd February 1963 in Bydgoszcz.

Graduate of Oxford University (Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts), where he read philosophy, political science and economy (PPE).

He was the chairman of the Pupils’ Strike Committee during the Bydgoszcz events in March 1981. In 1981-1989 he was a political refugee in Great Britain. In 1986-1989 he was a reporter during wars in Afghanistan and Angola.

As deputy minister of defence participated in 1992 in the talks aimed at Poland’s membership in NATO. In 1998-2001 he was undersecretary of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the chairman of the Council of the Foundation “Assistance for the Poles in the East” (Fundacja Pomoc Polakom na Wschodzie).

In 2002-2005 he was resident fellow of the American Enterprise Institute in Washington and executive director of the New Atlantic Initiative (Nowa Inicjatywa Atlantycka). He is the editor of series of analytical publications European Outlook, as well as an organizer of international conferences, for example on the UN reform, the future of NATO and the 25th anniversary of the Solidarity movement. He gave evidence, as an expert on transatlantic issues, before the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives of the USA. He is a publicist and a commentator of leading Polish and international media.

He wrote three books: “Prochy świętych - podróż do Heratu w czas wojny ”(The ashes of the saints – the voyage to Herat in wartime), “The Polish House - an Intimate History of Poland” and “Strefa zdekomunizowana – wywiad rzeka” (The de-communized zone – an extended interview).

Member of the Senate of the 6th term, representing the Bydgoszcz district.

In 2005-2007: minister of national defence.

World Press Photo prize-winner in 1988 in the category of reporter photographs for his photograph from Afghanistan. “The Man of the Year 2005” of Gazeta Polska. “Wiktor 2006” prize-winner in the category of the most popular politician. Awarded with the medal „Zasłużony dla Kultury” (Distinguished Service for Culture).

Member of the Sejm of the 6th term from the Bydgoszcz district, representing the Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska).

Married to Anne Applebaum, a journalist and a writer, the Pulitzer prize-winner in 2004 for the book “Gulag”. They have two sons: Aleksander and Tadeusz.
